Virginia’s Caring University Scholarship Walk-a-thon
Each spring, the VCU Staff Senate sponsors an annual walk-a-thon to raises funds for the Virginia's Caring University Scholarship, an undergraduate award for juniors and seniors in financial need with a grade point average of 2.7 or better who can demonstrate past or current community service. Since beginning the program in 2005, the scholarship has helped 22 undergraduate students continue their education and graduate from VCU.
In 2008, the fourth year for the event, the VCU Staff Senate celebrated its largest walk-a-thon to date, with more than 200 participants raising $11,600 in contributions from departments across both campuses and at all levels, including staff, faculty, students and members of the community. Some of this year’s community sponsors included Target, Sam’s Club, Ab[Soul]ute Massage, the Barksdale Theater, the Richmond Braves, the Cheesecake Factory, Olive Garden, the Crown Plaza Hotel and the Jefferson Hotel. Prior to this year’s event, the Staff Senate raised more than $24,000 in scholarship funds during the walk-a-thon’s first three years.
